What is it – Mindfulness and Meditation are quite interrelated. Meditation is a mental exercise that encourages awareness, focus and relaxation. According to Jon Kabat Zinn, “Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally. Mindfulness can be attained through formal (meditation) and informal (being present in everyday moments) practices however both need to be practised regularly.
What are the benefits – The mental, cognitive and physical benefits of mindfulness and meditation are extensive. Results may vary from person to person but some positive aspects of a regular practice include increased happiness, positivity, compassion, improved, relationships, work satisfaction and reduced stress, anxiety and depression. From a cognitive perspective one can expect increased attention, memory, creativity, focus and innovation. Physically – reduced chronic pain , levels of Cortisol, improved immune function, cardiovascular factors, sleep.
